Prep For Change

How do you hope to heal? What do you need to prepare for this change?

Research says that you should begin to prepare for college when in middle school. Create digital stories about college education, plan tours, observe classes, have dining hall experiences. Talk about admission, financial aid and scholarships. Access college environments, stop, sit, journal, write to gain perspective about college culture. Build academic behavior through self-monitoring, self-awareness and self-control. Get a tutor to increase grades in core classes. Find a mentor to help identify an area of interest and long-term life objectives. Attend panel discussions and collaborate. All of this can lead to higher rates of college participation (Radcliffe & Bos, 2013).

Some have a 5-year plan. Others a 10-year plan. I would have never anticipated this would become my life change. But, I’ve taken these same suggestions to prep, draft, create, plan, observe, talk, access, write, build, mentor and collaborate. I’m sitting in reflection, preparing myself mentally, financially, and emotionally. Change is hard, even for a behavior analyst.
